nd I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; Genesis 9:9.”
In June 1986, a tent was erected at the intersection of Hall and West Broad Streets. For six weeks, Elder Calvin Watkins conducted evangelistic meetings at this site. As a result, more than150 converts were baptized; thus inspiring Elder Horace L. Jones, pastor of West Broad Street SDA Church, to recommend the establishment of a second Seventh-day Adventist church in Savannah, under the auspices of the South Atlantic Conference of Seventh-day Adventist. Under the leadership of Elder Horace L. Jones, Pastor Gary Jouett, and Pastor Samuel Perry, this church was called The Remnant Church.
With the help of Elder Jones and a group of dedicated members from West Broad Street SDA Church, we were able to embark on our journey as a new church with the determination to tell others of the Three Angels’ Message. Pastor Jouett and Pastor Perry left Savannah in September 1986 to assume duties elsewhere. When they left, the Lord blessed us with Pastor William Winston. Early in 1987, the church voted to change its name from Remnant SDA Church to New Covenant SDA Church.
A Revelation Seminar was held in the summer of 1988, which resulted in the addition of sixteen members to the New Covenant church family. Through the Grace of God, and the able leadership of Elder Winston, many accomplishments were made, including the purchase of property and the construction of our current home at 5100 LaRoche Avenue.
Along with the original building plans for New Covenant, a parking lot was included, but was not paved at that time. In 1992, the South Atlantic Conference transferred Pastor Winston from New Covenant and replaced him with Pastor Carl Nesmith.
That same year, Pastor Nesmith tasked a parking lot committee to resurrect the plans for paving the parking area. In April 1998, Pastor Nesmith was transferred and replaced the following month by Pastor Crawford Humphrey.
In September 1998, Pastor Humphrey appointed another committee. On January 2000, Pastor Humphrey signed a contract with the paving company and work began March 2000 – soon after Pastor Stephan Davis took over the pastoral position of New Covenant. Pastor Davis signed the contract for landscaping the grounds July 2000 and August 2000 our parking lot was dedicated.
Our pastors have been Pastor Samuel Perry, Pastor William Winston, Pastor Carl Nesmith, Pastor Crawford Humphrey and presently Pastor Stephan Davis.
It was and still is our faith in God that kept and continues to keep us working towards our ultimate goal of spreading the gospel throughout our community. We thank God for blessing us and pray that he will continue to bless the work that He has commanded us to do. “Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD. Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore., (Psalm 113:1,2).”
